Abstract Western Liaoning is tectonically situated in the compound section of the E-W-trending Yinshan-Yanshan structure and the NNE-trending subsidence zone of Neocathaysian structural system. Based on the three essential factors for water storage structure, the types and conditions of the water storage structure in the area are analyzed. The main water storage structures are horizontal layer, fold and fault, contact zone and weathered crust of bedrock. At the same time, the targets for water searching and the model for exploitation and utilization of groundwater in this area are put forward.
