Abstract The major and trace element contents of surface sediment samples in the mid-Pacific Ocean are studied, with element correlation and R-mode factor analysis. The result indicates a positve correlation between SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, K2O, MnO and Na2O, showing the same terrigenous origin. They are in negative correlation to CaO, CaCO3 and Sr, which originated mainly from biogenic deposition.
