Abstract Tuquan Basin, located in the mid-south of Daxinganling region, covered by volcanic rocks, was recognized as a new area for oil and gas exploration by the program of fundamental geological survey for energy resources. This basin will promisingly achieve a breakthrough for oil and gas exploration in new Jurassic horizons and areas in the periphery of Songliao Basin. Based on the analysis of geological background and sedimentary characters about the source rocks, the designing ideas of the TC1 and TD1 drill holes and the discovery of crude oil are expounded. Moreover, the paper also discusses the prototype restoration of basin, assessment of source rocks, exploration methods in volcanic rock-covered areas, as well as the analysis of ultralow porosity and permeability reservoir related to the unconventional tight oil.
