Abstract Tongren area, belonging to the Yangtze stratigraphic region, is located in the Wuling mountainous area in the northeast of Guizhou Province. The manganese deposits are hosted in the Datangpo formation of Lower Huanan system. The ore bed is 0.58 -3.58 m thick, averagely 1.65, with rich reserves. The manganese resources are distributed in Songtao, Wanshan and Yinjiang areas, in which those in Songtao area are dominated, forming the "Mn-triangle" of Songtao (Guizhou)-Xiushan (Chongqing)-Jishou (Hunan). By the end of 2009, the accumulated reserves of 71 607 150 ton of manganese carbonate ore have been found out, showing a great potential and prospect for development and utilization.
