Abstract The concept of "contemporaneous" tectostratigraphic unit with orogeny is established according to the characteristics of the Late Mesozoic sedimentary formation, volcano-sedimentary formation, biological and structural type assemblages in northern Hebei-western Liaoning-Daxinganling region. It is believed that the concept can help understand the complicated "synorogenic" continental deposits in marginal active areas and the stratigraphic system in volcano-sedimentary basin with the outline of regional tectonic evolution. The stratigraphic division and correlation scheme is accordingly brought forward from the view of regional tectonics.
